The Outer Hebrides (also known as Western Isles) are an archipelago of islands lying 30 off the North West coast of Scotland. There are 11 inhabited islands in the archipelago, which stretches some 200 km from Barra in the South to the Butt of Lewis in the North. The Butt being the most northwesterly point in Europe.

The capital of the Islands is Stornoway, on Lewis, and the population of the chain is some 27,000.Along the whole Atlantic coast of the archipelago there is a line of large shell-sand beaches, many of them several kilometres long. Clean and unspoiled, these beaches are regularly voted as among the finest in Europe. They include the famous “Cockle Strand” on Barra, the only official beach airport in Britain. The coast also boasts stunning sea cliffs and inland the islands have moorland and mountains. Making it an adventure playground of huge proportions.

The islands are home to the famous Harris Tweed, still produced by hand on the crofts. With settlements dating back several thousand years, the islands are full of archaeological sites of great interest. Gaelic the traditional language of the islands is still spoken on a daily basis.
